Kiley Sabin led Minnesota throwing 16.48m (54-01.00) to finish as the runner-up to Janeah Stewart of Ole Miss (16.98m 55-08.50). Fellow Gopher Nayoka Clunis finished third with a career-best throw of 15.67m (51-05.00) to move into 10th in Gophers' history; she also moved into 10th in program history with a career-best throw of 59.71m (195-11) to place seventh in hammer throw.

Shay opened the 2018 outdoor track & field season with a third-place finish in the shot put at the University of Houston Cougar Spring Break Invitational in March. She is in her second season competing in uniform for the Maroon & Gold this year and has already made her mark on the University of Minnesota record books.

The 2018 indoor season saw Nielsen record a career-best mark of 15.91m (52-02.50) to place ninth in the shot put at the Big Ten Championship and move into eighth place in program history. Nielsen competed at six indoor meets, recording six top-10 finishes, including taking third at the Parents Day Invite and fifth at the Minnesota-Wisconsin Dual.

Nielsen's outdoor PR of 15.81m (51-10.50) is tied for sixth among all-time Minnesota shot-putters and represents a mark she set at the Sun Angel Classic during the 2017 season.
