Seven top seeds advance in Seniors

Seven of the top eight seeds advanced to the Pine to Palm Seniors division quarterfinals with five of those matches ending early on the back nine.

Defending champion Dan Ystebo was tested in a 1-up victory over No. 16 Rick Johnson. Ystebo’s second round opponent, No. 8 Scott Linnerooth, won by the same score over No. 9 Chuck Wiger.

No. 4 Craig Stein went the distance with No. 13 Mark Norman winning 1-up also.

The remainder of the matches never reached the 18th tee box.

No. 10 Jim Strandemo had the lone upset victory with a dominating 7&6 win over No. 7 Bill Schommer.

Strandemo will play No. 2 AJ Greff in the quarters. Greff, the division’s medalist, was a 5&4 winner over No. 15 George Strand.

Both No. 3 Kent Spriggs and No. 6 Gregg Western posted 3&2 victories and will square off in the next round. Spriggs defeated Keith Aasen; Western was victorious over Brad Ericksen.

No. 5 Dan Drenth defeated No. 12 Lee Erickson 3&1 to set up a match with Stein in the final quarters match.

Seniors second round matches begin at 12:51 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10 with Ystebo versus Linnerooth - last year’s champ versus a two-time winner on hole No. 1.
