Uithoven Mid-Am medalist for third time

Scott Uithoven is the only multiple medalist in a decade of Mid-Am play at the Pine to Palm tournament and notched his third top qualifying finish in the past five years winning by four strokes Tuesday.

Uithoven led the entirety of both rounds building on a two-stroke lead after the opening day of play finishing one-under par 141 (70-71).

Uithoven was the 2015 runner-up and champion in 2016 and will be seeded second behind the defending champion Perry Piatz.

BEN JURGENS

Darren Haley of Bismarck (72-73 145) and Ben Jurgens of Fergus Falls (72-74 146) finished a stroke apart after a tie at two strokes back after day one.

Detroit Lakes’ Jason Justesen (150) and Aaron Burnside (151) qualified fifth and seventh, respectively. Kevin Swenson of Fergus Falls, father of Pine to Palm defending champion Chris Swenson, is in between - seeded sixth after shooting 151.

North Dakota State University women’s head golf coach Matthew Johnson rounded out the top half of the field seeded eighth shooting a two-day score of 154.

The bottom half of the field consists of only three golfers from Minnesota in Hawley’s Shawn Justesen seeded 10th, Michael Melhus of Rogers 13th and the 16-seed Frank Campbell of Lake Elmo who broke a three-way tie to nab the final spot (159) over Fargo’s Brady Opheim and Trevor Opheim.

Campbell faces two-time and defending champion Piatz in the first round of match play beginning Thursday, Aug. 9. Piatz has a shot at becoming the first three-time Mid-Am champion. He shares two titles (2013, 2016) with Jay Olafson (2009, 2011) and Kent Spriggs (2014-15).

Paul Uithoven of Bozeman, Montana is the nine-seed, Fargo’s Chad Ransom is 11th, followed by Brian Mahoney of Reiles Acres, North Dakota 12th. Todd Wawers and Jon Studsrud, both from Fargo, are at 14 and 15, respectively.
