Detroit Lakes man arrested in sex sting operation
A Detroit Lakes man is one of two men facing felonies after being caught allegedly soliciting children for sex in an undercover sting operation.
Alexander John Coyne, age 29, appeared in Crow Wing County District Court in Brainerd, Minn. on June 28 on multiple charges: soliciting a child to engage in sexual conduct, soliciting a child (or believing to be a child) through electronic communication to engage in sexual conduct, and engaging in electronic communication relating or describing sexual conduct with a child.
Brock Morgan Jones, 39, of Aitkin, faced those same charges in court June 29.
The two were arrested following proactive undercover chat operations conducted by law enforcement in Crow Wing County.
As part of the operation an investigator, posing as a 14-year-old juvenile female, contacted Coyne via the internet on June 26 and told him she was 14 and that she had a friend, as well. Coyne then initiated communication concerning the girl's sexual experience and the sexual experience of her friend.
According to the criminal complaint, Coyne volunteered to meet with the girl and her friend, and sent photos of himself. Arrangements were made to meet, and Coyne was arrested.
Coyne admitted to law enforcement that he engaged with a girl he believed to be 14.
Jones was arrested in a similar sting on June 27. After a short online conversation with Jones, the investigator requested to switch to another media site and Jones and the “girl” began text messaging.
According to the complaint, Jones asked the "girl" if she was 19 and the investigator responded that she was not. Jones asked for a photo. After more conversation, Jones asked her how old she really is and the "girl" responded, "14." Jones asked the “girl” if she wanted "someone to have sex with,” and the “girl” responded with a non-committal answer. After more discussion, Jones suggested they could hang out and try having sex if the girl wanted. He asked how she could get out without getting caught, and the "girl" explained she was home alone.
Arrangements were made for Jones to meet with the "girl" at a location in Crow Wing County. When Jones arrived at that location, he was arrested.
Jones admitted to law enforcement that he engaged with a girl he believed to be 14.
