Bicyclist killed in crash with SUV on rural road near Fargo identified

REILE’S ACRES, N.D. – The bicyclist killed in a collision with an SUV Wednesday, June 20, northwest of Fargo on a rural county road has been identified.

The North Dakota State Patrol said  Kathy M. Hettenbaugh was the victim of the fatal crash.

Hettenbaugh, 56, of Fargo, died at the scene from injuries suffered in the crash on Cass County Road 20 near the small town of Reile’s Acres.

Funeral arrangements are pending with West Funeral Home and Life Tribute Center in West Fargo.

On Wednesday, Hettenbaugh was riding east on County Road 20 when she began turning onto 47th Street North, according to the  Patrol.

A Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by 31-year-old James Austin, of Fargo, was traveling east behind the bicycle before hitting it, the patrol said.

Hettenbaugh and her bicycle ended up in the south ditch of County Road 20. The Trailblazer, with its windshield cracked and front bumper nearly falling off, came to a stop nearby, facing east on the north side of the road.

The patrol is investigating the crash.
